Hi,
Has anyone any experience of Schill malt. The Pilsner seems very good value at about £25 for a 25kg sack . I have heard before that leading brands are the same as others and that base malt is base malt please tell me what you think?. I don't want to buy rubbish malt and waste my time and money. Would you buy it?.
Thanks for any opinions.

The beers where the base malt does matter are those which don't have big flavours from the yeast and hops, so if you're buying it to make a Pilsner then you'll probably be able to discern a difference between malts... However I've not heard of the maltster you mention so can't say how good it is.

I gave into my darkest fears and paid the extra for Wayermanns Pilsner . At least I am sure I am starting with good ingredients. Do you lads think you get what you pay for or are you just buying the name?.

There is definitely a difference between base malts. US 2-row, British pale ale malt and European pilsner malts do taste different. You may get different mash efficiencies too. However, that doesn't mean that any one of them is bad, just different.

Making beers from base malts alone is one of my favourite drinks. Being base malt only can be tricky having no crystals or roasted to hide faults. I bought top of the range malt because I have used Bairds malt before. If I had to use Bairds malt I would make cider or drink only tea.I will try Schill Pilsner malt in the Summer. Germans make good products usually.
