Dry hopping question

Post by Bazz » Thu Apr 02, 2015 6:45 pm

Hi all, I'm currently dry hopping a beer that I brewed 10 days ago, 2 days ago I put 65g of leaf hops into a muslin hop bag, as I don't have any sort of filter, and chucked them into my fv, however I just had a sneak peak in there and the bag is still floating on the surface, I kind of expected it to sink after a while as it became saturated. So I gave it a bit of a prod with a spoon to encourage it under the surface but the damn thing is bobbing like a cork.

Should I empty the hops out to float loose? Would this cause me issues when it comes to draining out the beer a couple of days as I have no filter on the tap?

Thanks.

I've read you can put a marble in the muslin bag (I guess anything sterile, non reactive and heavy will do). I dry hop loose leaf, 3 days warm, 2 days cold and most of the hops are below the water line with some sunk when time to bottle it.

I've only dry hopped once. I'm fairly novice (AG#8 tomorrow) but I found the bag slowly submerged over a few days. I held my nerve and it tasted great.

Hops float. End of.

If you want to get the whole lot submerged you'll need to weigh the hop bag down with something heavy.

Or you could put the leaf hops through a blender and put them in loose. Then cable tie the hop bag over the end of your syphon to stop bits getting sucked up.

Thanks for the help, I think I'll leave them in the bag for the next couple of days and see if it sinks a little and if not then tip them out while I cold crash it, if they are going to stay floating then then it shouldn't cause to many problems when I open the tap at the bottom to keg it as they will be with the last bit of beer in the FV.

I put some baking beads in a hop bag and tie up, than add this to another hop bag and add the hops.

I bought a 10 pack of these stainless steel bearings in 11/16 inch size (bout 17.5mm) and boil them up with the hop-sock, even then I have had large quantities of hops float initially but they eventually sink

Dry hop everything loose and syphon through a fine micron filter bag. You'll get much better hop utilisation that way.

I put a few marbles in the hop bag to make it sink.

I used to weight the bag down with a spoon or two. Now I just chuck in the pellets. Leaf hops would need a bag though.
