Whats the diffrenece ?
Hi All
Not sure if its been asked before but am wondering what the difference is in "crisp marris otter and pale ale malt" and fawcetts marris otter ?, I mostly brew pales and blondes, but noticed a price difference in the sacks.

Maris Otter is just a variety of winter barley that has become well known as being highly flavoured and thus very good in English beers.
Crisp and Fawcett are the maltsters - they take the raw barley and malt it to make the grain we use to brew. So the difference between Crisp and Fawcett Maris Otter is going to largely be down to how they malt their barley and who they've purchased it from. You might get the tiniest of flavour differences, and you may also get slight differences in efficiency, although you're only likely to notice those on a more industrial scale.
Pale Ale Malt will just be another variety of winter barley (Pearl, Flagon, Cassata are the main three), perhaps not quite as flavourful as Maris Otter, but the difference won't be huge, and it'll probably be a bit cheaper.

I'm on my second sack of Flagon and have to say I couldn't tell the difference between the beer's I've made with MO and Flagon in a blind tasting.
Personally I think freshness has more impact on the quality of the beer than the malt type.

Might go for crisp MO but seen propino at the malt Miller for £19 hmmm

All uk malting barley is of a very high standard, certainly among the best in the world. If you are doing side by side comparisons with say 100% base malt with fairly light hopping then you'd probably be able to tell any differences between cultivars and maltsters. But I wouldn't really worry too much, try them all

Why not buy it crushed?

I buy crushed at the moment , but would like to buy whole as am not sure how long crushed would last without affecting the efficiency.
