A right Royal Brew!

Post by Halfacrem » Mon Apr 11, 2016 3:03 pm

My Mother In Law is organising a tea Party in celebration of The Queens 90th (not sure if it's her proper B-day or her pretend one :? ). The only way I can motivate myself to attend such an event is by making sure I'm well lubricated, so I'm thinking of getting brave and doing a brew to put in my pressure barrel to take along.

To at least pretend I'm getting into the spirit of things, it should be something British (I thought of doing something German, but that might not go down too well). Something on the brown side (perhaps), not too high in alcohol for afternoon supping and a brew that will mature nicely in about 6 weeks. Something London inspired or at least traditionally British, but not too bland.

My first thought was a London Pride, or a Hogs Back T.E.A but they don't really get my inspiration levels floating.

Any thoughts to help me out? (Oh, it will be an AG brew)

I like your thinking and there's at least a couple of links there! :D However, my MIL is bad enough on the Sauvignon Blanc! I'm not sure I should be encouraging anarchy on such a Stately occasion! :-k

You could include all sorts really... IPA... Australian or New Zealand hops... Just use the excuse of it celebrating the Commonwealth that the Queen is head of.

I like that line of thinking =D> Something that fits in with the Commonwealth is a great idea.

I'd like it to be cask ale style, to fit in with the PB, so not anything that needs too much carbing up. Maybe a Pale or Summer Ale, or British IPA malt bill. Nothing too aggressive on the Hop front. I quite like the idea of combining a classic English Hop with a New World antipodean? I've not used any NZ hops before? Some thoughts of a blend of English and NZ hops would be appreciated. I'm tempted to slip in a German Noble hop just for my own sad amusement :)

Windsor Yeast is a good shout, though not used it before. What style does it suit?

A sour German beer like a gose would be the most apt for the occasion.

I'm drinking an Alt at the moment and I was surprised how similar to a Bitter it was.

Hate to piss on your chips but her birthday is the 21st April. A low gravity beer and a beast of a yeast and force carbonation and you might just make it. I've brewed one for the Village beacon lighting (see sig below). Sovereign hops keep the theme going.
I am "The Little Red Brooster"

Fermenting:
Conditioning:
Drinking: Southwold Again,

Up Next: John Barleycorn (Barley Wine)
Planning: Winter drinking Beer

The event is taking place on 11th June; Trooping The Colour Day, which is apparently The Queens Birthday Parade (She knows how to string out a Party).

It's used in a lot of "traditional" English ales.

Does have a reputation for poor attenuation though.

I'm doing something similar to mark the occasion and currently have a prototype ale conditioning that uses all Sovereign hops :)

Probably better weather too. Think I should have an official birthday as my real ones in February. :D
