45 litre batch - only 1 packet of yeast!
45 litre batch - only 1 packet of yeast!
Did my first brew since Christmas today.
Citra and 1st Gold pale ale.
Put a double batch on and just checked my yeast stock. I only have only 1 packet of ale yeast!
I do have a packet of lager yeast.
The wort will be going into 2 separate FV's.
What should I do?
Try and make a starter with the ale yeast and pitch it across both?
Use the lager yeast and ferment half the batch at 12°C? Will be revolting/strange/undrinkable?
Drive to my nearest supply and buy some more, which will be a 20 mile round trip?

You have 2 packets of yeast and 2 fermenters. The answer seems obvious. The only issue is if they have to be fermented at the same temperature. If so you will need to do it quite cool for the ale. Success will depend on the yeast strains. But if you have separate chambers then you will make a nice ale and a nice lager.

Or one ale and one "Steam beer".
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.

Went for the ale and lager yeast option.
They will be fermented separately at the proper temperatures.
Should be interesting to see the different results!

What temperature are you fermenting the lager at? Are you aware that if fermenting at proper lager temperature then you should be pitching 2-3 packets of yeast, hence my steam beer suggestion.

If you pitch lager yeast at 20C and then lower the temperature after 24 hours, then you only need one packet. At least this works with Saflager S-23.

Which two yeasts?
You can ferment lager yeast at ale temperature.

I'm just here for the beer.
Re: 45 litre batch - only 1 packet of yeast!
Yeast is the first thing I sort out now for my brew days. I've had a couple of batches which have had long lag times and fermentation has 'stuck', all due to underpitching I'm sure. The resulting beer has had strong off flavours and been pretty undrinkable.
Good luck with yours, I hope they turn out ok for you.
