iodine solution

Post by slim34 » Mon Jul 30, 2007 6:28 pm

i read somewhere that you can check the efficiency of your sparge by doing an iodine test on the back of a white plate.

when i went into a health food shop today for some jumbo oat flakes for my forthcoming attempt at hoegaarden (advised by a nice lady from hop and grape), I also asked for some iodine solution.

The assistant said that it was dangerous stuff and as far as she was aware health foods shops stopped stocking stuff like that a long time ago.

i'm confused and/or stupid

There was some tincture of iodine in my chemists the other day. So mayb try that - failing that the homebrew shops may have it (the HopShop lists it on their website).

It's not for checking your sparge. It's actually for checking the mash has converted completely. You need a white tile also.

The same brew shop may well have the little bottles of 'Iodine Solution' 'Starch test Solution' etc, like little eye drop bottles with a dropper built in the lid. When mine ran out, I just refilled with iodine solution because the dropper is so handy.

Bollocks to the chemist, go to the homebrew shop ;)

The iodine test is to take a teaspoon of your mash, place it on a clean white saucer and put a couple of drops of iodine onto it. If it turns blue you haven't achieved conversion - if it stays a darkish brown then conversion is complete.

Think I've got that right.

Didn't know it could be used as a sanitiser though.
