Wonderful bitter orange peel!

Post by guypettigrew » Sun Jun 30, 2019 4:28 pm

For some time now the use of orange peel in a light brew has been tempting me. Robwalkeragain posted about it's use in the 'Sunshine Marmalade' beer from his brewery, so I was finally tempted to give it a go.

The last Malt Miller order included 500g of the stuff in readiness for the right beer.

A month or so ago I brewed a beer with Maris Otter, Vienna and pale crystal malts. With some flaked oats. Hops were Cascade and Pacific Gem. 75g of peel went in 3 minutes before turning the heat off, then were left to steep for 15 minutes after dropping the temperature to just below 80°C. Yeast was Fermentum Mobile 52, liquid, first use.

The beer was dropped into a King keg after about a week and dry hopped with 50g of Citra pellets.

And it's luvverly!! The peel gives it a fresh citrusy aroma and taste but isn't overpowering.

Definitely something I'll be doing again.
