The Hop & Grape 10 Gallon starter brewery is a good set up and seems to have served many here well - it's based around a 60L boiler and a 60L FV. the only limitation is the mashtun is about 30L which will top you out at about 5% ABV for a 10G batch, or 10% ABV for a 5G brew.

You can of course make your own kit for a bit less money, but a 60L boiler will stand you in good stead however you come about it.

Are you willing to say which Maltster? When I enquired about buying a sack of Crushed Maris Otter from our nearest (Warminster) I was told "£29 for a 25 kilo sack for home brewers". This is a lot more (probably double) what the micro breweries pay, and seems to be something to do with homebrew shops having some kind of 'arrangement' (or am I just being paranoid?).

Not sure what defence there is in law for this kind of behaviour, but before getting all 'antsy', I would welcome more information about buying direct from malsters.

Go for it. It will be the best investment in both time and money you will make. As for the tlme, once you have mastered the art you can leave it for long periods and do other things. But you need to be around for checks etc. which means you can`t go shopping saturday aftrenoon.

OP subject header, is this a trick question. Most satisfying hobby i have ever had and if you have even a smattering of bloke type bob the builder genetics in you will have great fun tweaking your kit or building from scratch. i agree with posts on 10 gallon brewery. I am still on my first set up at 5 gallon but can see 10 gallon not too far ahead. Oh yeah and you get good beer out fo the hobby.

I took delivery of my H&G 10gal brewery this week and was impressed with the quality for the cost. Only problem is that I know I'll be drawn to the shiny stuff in time

Do it.

Cons:
Costs a lot more money to equip yourself than kit brewing
Takes five hours plus to brew versus about 20 minutes
Cleaning up is much more annoying
Addictive

Pros:
Great beer you can be proud of and call your own
A proper hobby with enjoyment every step of the way
Tinkering and manufacturing
A great community to play in and learn from
