How do I?
Re: How do I?
Once you've made your kit brew I would suggest making an extract brew and when you've done that get yourself into all grain brewing and you'll never look back.

Re: How do I?
Or you could do what I did as usual and jump in the deep end!!
I did one Wherry kit and then built some equipment to do AG. It is the mutts nuts!!
You will never experience such a steep learning curve and you can go wrong with all the very helpful people on here!

Scrape off the corrosion. Use a Knife, pan scrub and toothbrush. Its possible you'll quickly get it back to sound metal and as it does not contact the beer should pose no problem. Stick the lid in a weak bleach solution to sterilise it before giving the metal a light coat of vaseline that you'll use to grease and make the seal before you write them off.I will check out the barrels and see that they are ok when I have bought some new screw on lids
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

Cool, thanks. I hadn't even considered cleaning the lids up. I was just going to bin them and get new tops.. There are four lids in total, 2 pairs with different sized threads on them. I will clean them up and see hw they look, perhaps posting a picture here to see what you think. One thing I think will definately need replacing though is the rubber O ring or Gasket that is inside the lid.
Thanks again.

They are worth replacing and are relatively cheap. That's where you'll spend a little more to carry spares. One thing I think will definately need replacing though is the rubber O ring or Gasket that is inside the lid.
I'm confident you'll clean the valves but stick up a picture if you're in doubt. I think they are aluminium which cleans well with steel wool but you'll likely not even need that.
