Conditioning in King Keg
Re: Conditioning in King Keg
Vaseline never did my O-ring any harm, am currently at the tipping-up-to-get-the-last-bit-out stage and still have pressure.
Not sure the O-ring is made of rubber, maybe poly-something though?

Petroleum Kelly aka Vaseline is a relative of rubber (bith oil derivatives) I think so it doesn't bother it!

Re: Conditioning in King Keg
yeh vaseline is fine. it does degrade latex hence not to be used for more ..ahem... 'personal' reasons. when it comes to the keg KY would be far worse as it is water soluable and would get in your beer! who knows, some might like the taste

The pin sometimes sticks on S30 canisters and you can slowly lose all your gas. It happened to me once so now I always check the cylinder after use. The trick is to immerse the valve end only in warm water and it should close, or as you found a sharp tap can do the same (always a bit wary of hitting gas cylinders, though).
Carbon dioxide isn't poisonous, you breathe it in and out all day, more out than in. It's only dangerous if there's no oxygen to breathe, which is why people die of suffocation if they fall into fermenting coppers or grain silos. It's carbon monoxide from fires, boilers and engines that is toxic and a silent killer.
Is you KK leaking from the O-ring or the inlet/safety valve? Taking it all apart, cleaning up and applying vaseline often does the job but eventually the rubbers on the valve get a bit stretchy and need replacing.

Vaseline on the o-ring inside the lid should seal the keg and then you'll be fine.
Personally I find that barrels mature slower than bottles so if you keep it airtight then it'll be drinking best around 4-6 weeks in.

Intreresting, I usually find the converse true, leaving my bottles for a month or so before drinking and usually going at my keg at around the ten day mark. Although I usually only bottle my stronger beers (6%+) and do like my hop flavour, which I find tend to diminish after a month in keg.Chase24 wrote:Vaseline on the o-ring inside the lid should seal the keg and then you'll be fine.

Re: Conditioning in King Keg
Just by way of an update - I replaced the obviously leaking lid, no hissing or anything now, however the gas only last for a night. So i just give it a blast when I am using the Keg, and that does me. Not ideal, but it's been a worthwhile experiment in using kegs rather than bottling all the beer all the time.
