Does everyone get rapid fermentation with Nottingham yeast?

Did you rehydrate the yeast first ?
Pitching dry yeast onto a starter/ onto wort can kill up to 50% of the cells.
If you rehydrate then pitch you will have more healthy yeast cells.
Of course, lots of people throw dry yeast onto their wort anyway and still end up with good beer.

Once you rehydrate dry yeast you can of course pitch into a starter but it is probably easier and less risky to pitch two packs of dry yeast - it's cheap stuff - though typically 1 pack of fresh dry yeast is sufficient for 23L.
In any case it sounds like the fermentation is complete.
Did you use bubbling of an airlock as an indication of activity ? My airlocks often don't bubble due to small leaks in the lid of the fermenting bin.
I usually pitch, leave well alone for a week, then check the gravity.

I did indeed Killer,

I have a tap line fixing on the lid of the bucket that I screw a line onto which runs down into a bottle of water (there isnt the headroom in the fridge for a typical airlock). Usually this glugs away like crazy for a week or so but not this time. As you say maybe there is a leak but I am pretty confident there isn't. End of the day there is no doubt that its done.

On the yeast font I didn't hydrate however I pitched a 1L starter from one pack and a full second pack so even if I did loose 50% of the cells there was at least 100% of a packets worth no question. I think next time ill do a simple rehydration.

Its only on day six but I sampled it last night and all is very well. Already tastes like just yeasty beer, no tang that I would still expect at this stage so fingers crossed for a great brew.
