Well, it just sits on the lid, and hangs over the side. Of course its clean :) but in any case it isn't in much of a position to come into contact with the wort. On a keggle though, you could probably get away with foil as you'd have some sort of lip to wrap a bungie round. No such luck on my boiler :(

My wort is cooled in the boiler using an immersion chiller.

I stir the wort with a very long handled plastic spoon while the water's running through the chiller. It takes about 10 minutes to get from boiling to about 25C.

The chiller coil is then taken out and the wort left to settle for 20 to 30 minutes before running off. During this time the lid is put back on the boiler.

The process can be varied slightly for ales which have aroma hops added at flame out. If doing this I cool to about 80c with the chiller, which takes a couple of minutes, add the hops and leave them, chiller in place, for 30 minutes. Then cool down to 25C.

i always transfer from the boiler into an fv with a strainer in and cool it in this .the only reason i do this is i make 2 brews at a time and to save time i need to get the 2nd batch on a boil asap ,i transfer using a 5ltr heavy duty jug. can get a bit messy but i brew in the garage so its not a problem

Most FV's are PP so they will be able to handle boiling wort, check first of course. I've seen people use them for HLT/MT/BK (Youngs FV's anyway) So I don't think it'd be an issue in any case

Thanks for all the responses chaps.

In the end, I thought better of messing around with wort that is over 100 degrees C :!: . I used a tea towel (thanks Darkonnis) dunked in a starsan solution with excess solution squeezed out. I just placed it over the open bits between the lid and the keggle, this also allowed me to agitated the wort around the chiller by moving the ciller up and down as per Skittlebrau’s suggestion. I have to say, you can feel the change in water temperature coming out as soon as the chiller is moved about.
