I have found a system that works very well for me is simple.

I have an ATC 800+ temp gauge. I use the probe on the side of the FV inserted into a small sqaure of polystrene ( not sure if I have spelt that right) so that the probe is against the FV. This gives the temp of the liquid as opposed to the ambiant temp.
Works well for me. The general concensus is that I turn out some good grog. ( others words, not mine).

A good ale makes the world come right when you drink enough of it. :D :D
