campden??
Re: campden??
So should you boil and add half a tablet? Or add half a tablet and leave it to stand over night? What's the consensus?

Okie dokie. I use sodium met to rinse bottles ect after sterilising to neutralise my chlorine steriliser but I'm a tad apprehensive because it smells so bad! But if you peeps have never had a weird taste from using it then I will give it a go tomorrow

Right, I'm gonna ask another question ere now
if you don't rinse the starsan from the bottles surely you're leaving something albeit sterilised left in there that could impart off flavours? Or am I over thinking this?

I also do this. I had an infection once so now I go a little OTT. Thin bleach, followed by K-Meta (Potassium Metabisulfite), then StarSan/SaniClean. It takes longer, for sure (especially with bottles) and is probably not necessary but I'd rather waste some time doing this than all the time but into brewing and fermenting a batch only to throw it down the toilet!mozza wrote:Okie dokie. The StarSan is a recent addition (I had SaniClean before but didn't use it often) but I've developed a lot of faith in both these days. Puts my mind at rest, if nothing else and is very quick and easy to use provided you have a very neutral water (I use RO or stuff like Tesco Ashbeck).
Remember with StarSan/SaniClean to ensure you get the correct dose, too much and it isn't considered no-rinse.
The Hand of Doom Brewery and Meadery
Fermenting -
Conditioning - Meads - Raspberry Melomel yeast test, Vanilla Cinnamon Metheglyn, Orange Melomel.
Drinking - Youngs AAA Kit; Leatherwood Traditional Mead, Cyser, Ginger Metheglyn.
Planning - Some kits until I can get back to AG, then a hoppy porter, Jim's ESB, some American Red.

In this podcast with Jon Herskovits of five star chemicals, the only factor mentioned for Starsan to remain effective is that the PH must be 3.5 or less which even with my hard water it does even after weeks of storage. It does go instantly cloudy though which concerns some people.Cpt.Frederickson wrote:if nothing else and is very quick and easy to use provided you have a very neutral water (I use RO or stuff like Tesco Ashbeck).
