A straightforward way is to fill the tube with clean water. As long as you keep one end stopped with your thumb, it shouldn't flow out. Insert into what you want to siphon, make sure the other end is lower and release. If you are siphoning beer, you can see the colour change when the tube is full of it. Stop the tube again, discard that watered down liquid and then you are in business.

Of course, when I say straightforward, I conveniently ignore the fact that you need at least three hands to make it run smoothly...

Auto syphon or you could use a turkey baster. I use taps on the bottom of my FV's make life a lot easier.

I soak my hand in sanitiser and wrap it around the end of the syphon to form an extension of the tube. I then suck through the hand instead of the syphon tube.

hophit wrote:Stupid question but what technique do people employ for syphoning from fv to bottlng bucket? I keep getting the problem of gas/bubbles forming as the syphon progresses that float up the tube to the curve in the apex. This exascerbates the problem by reducing the flow rate so even more bubbles gather. Eventually the syphoning effect comes to a halt and I have to re-start it. A real PITA.
i used to worry about this a lot but once i started cold-crashing my beer, the bubbling stopped. so i came to the conclusion that the bubbles are CO2 and that the low temperature stops them coming out of solution.

like many others, i do have taps on my plastic FVs but i only use them for taking hydro samples, because i like to rack off from the top and avoid sediment.
