I think the sparge temp was the factor. I have a braided hose grain filter in my MT and always get over 80% efficiency with either sparge method, but I always sparge with water at 85. Because there are so many holes the water won't channel down it, it will run through it and collect in the bottom of the tun, as it fills up it will overflow through the tap having run straight through all the grain and the braid.
