I know, but the thought of £30 on yeast makes me shudder.....
Oh look - the £ sign works!!

Or buy one and step the yeast upManseMasher wrote:I know, but the thought of £30 on yeast makes me shudder.....

I looked into that. 5 step ups and about 8 litres required.....

8 litres seems a bit too much. Doing one vial in 1 litre @ 10 Plato would give you 1.5 times the cell count on top.ManseMasher wrote:I looked into that. 5 step ups and about 8 litres required.....
Re: Dumping trub from conical
I need the equivalent of four vials. According to Jainesh (that's where my figures came from), 5 steps, 8 litres. Not able to do that as I can't/won't find a flask like that that will fit on my stir plate! I need enough for approximately 80l.

When I was brewing 95L batches I would brew 20L of it three days before the main brew day . . Pitch yeast into that. Then make the 75 'batch' and tip the entire 20L active starter into the main batch. Only used 1 vial for the batch.

Now there's a good idea, thank you! I'll give that a go - I am a fan of some of the liquid yeasts.

Whoops! Yes, for 80l you need that much. My bad - didn't connect the dots ....ManseMasher wrote:I need the equivalent of four vials. Indeed, 4 vials would be the absolute minimum.
One doesn't need to propagate them all in one though. One can split the made yeast and keep propagating them separate thus avoiding the need for a large container. Quite a bit of work though...
My batches are 50l and I've got a 5l Erlenmeyer flask. It's HUGE. A 5-10l stainless container similar to a Carlsberg flask would have been be a better choice
