Im relatively new to this game but i haven't seen any improvement when using a secondary, i have seen an improvement when i left it in the primary for a month though.
Also it suits me just fine to only use a primary since im naturally lazy and can't be arsed with another step the efficacy of which im far from convinced about :D

Sound reasoning there delboy. I have always racked to secondary, that was the primary  reason I got a conical, It makes it so much easier and safer to keep beers for extended periods. If I was confident enough to leave my beers on the yeast for a month I could have saved some money

After about 20 years of brewing & always using a secondary up until about one year ago after reading about Daab & others not bothering i stopped bothering also. Like Delboy i think i have a slight improvement since omitting the secondary. When brewing the volume i do it just saves so much work & cuts the risk of infection & oxidation. The ability to crash cool & store my beer at 5oc under airlock with slight co2 pressure above the beer probably helps. I wouldn't be so keen to keep it in the primary for up to 4-5 weeks without temperature control & airlocked enviroment though  :D

I've recently changed to no secondary. The first beer using this method is due to be tapped on the 5/12.
I just wish I had the ability to crash cool to drop more of the yeast prior to racking!

As with many things, I seem to go back and forth on using a separate clearing vessel. Sometimes I use secondary, sometimes not. But usually it's 2-2.5 weeks in the primary and then straight to bottling bucket for bottling.

I've only had one batch that had flaws related to lack of secondary, but it was a special situation. I brewed an APA with lots of hops and quite a bit of hop pellet gunk got into the primary. I then left it in the primary for 33 days. It tastes a bit funky, and a lot like grass. :( So don't do that.
