or a length of chain, the stuff for the sink plug works well. And another vote for bottling, although emptying the mash tun and carrying the rubbish down 3 flights of stairs is a bit of a pain tooOld tip for getting the inside of bottles clean is use a teaspoon of rice grains (uncooked ya plank) and a small amount of water . Shake (that'll be the bottle again not you) and then Presto!!!

Let's all go home, pull on our gimp suits and enjoy life

If your bottles are full of crud due to nonunderstanding beermates then a soda crystal solution pre soak generally does the business, although i do like the chain idea to break it up.
I have now finished cleaning my current empty bottle collection and have 200 clean bottles. I've got enough beer in the FV to use 150 of them. I even had a bottle rationalisation and chucked out (recycled) all the 330ml ones(about 40)
, moved the swingtops up to the loft to be used in a Belgian stylie later on, so we'll see how we go with this lot. I reckon i must have about 400 in total. Not too sure how that happened although i do fill my empty suitcase with Efes bottles when i fly back from the apartment in Turkey. Seems daft to fly with 2 kg of dirty clothing when i could be maxxing out with 20 kgs of superstrong bottles!
P.S anyone from Aberdeenshire, i'll be out at Hunters moon in Auchleven for their beerfest & pigroast tomorrow night, looking forward to it. Say hi if you're there. I'm the good looking big guy with glasses who is generally a bit loud after the 3rd pint. Find me amongst the stack!

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!
Sir, you are drunk! Yes madam, and you are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober! - WSC

Mine are converted kegs, real pain until SWMBO suggested I use the Vax wet and dry.scuppeteer wrote:Cleaning out the mash tun and copper, is there not an easy solution???

My least favourite bit?
The time between pitching and seeing the first sign of fermentation. Until there's bubbles, failure is always possible.

Bottling would be the worst part of the process if I bottled. Why anyone wants to bottle beer is completely beyond me!
Apart from potential bottling i quite enjoy it all - even washing up at the end.

Bottled 80 bottles at the weekend. I agree its a pain.. I also print labels for them with the relevant info.. name, type, date bottled etc.. its a bloody pain but the satisfaction of seeing all those bottles stacked up in their crates is the source of much pride.. and when other people see and taste them and dont belive you made it.. A source of great pride. Fortunately i have an understanding partner who is quite happy to provide another set of hands and mucks in.. I love her really

Re: Least favourite part of the brewing cycle
Bottling, by a mile. 1) I always manage to get beer and sugar everywhere. 2) At some point a bottle will fly out from under the capper. 3) It takes ages and has to be done on the floor - I am a man, I don't do anything below waist level. 4) Sterilisation. 5) Keeping old bottles..............and the biggest reason for disliking bottling for me is.........so-called friends turn up and take away your beer. This year's cider is 440 pints - 100 will need to go into bottles as presents for them thats given me apples. I hate the very thought of it.
