Has anypne got a decent recipe fpr Jennings Cumberland ale?

it is listed as:

OG 1.040
Pale Malt
Torrefied Wheat
Invert Sugar

challenger, fuggles, goldings
IBU: 35 (just a guess, i would say its a similar bitterness to cockerhoop, which is listed as 35)

you should be able to make something in beersmith with that. I would go for an initial challenger addition, a 15 min fuggles and goldings addition and a 0 min goldings, unless anyone thinks any different

I just tried this for the first time yesterday and there was something a little reminiscant of bananas in there probably from their yeast as I wouldnt expect challenger goldings or fuggles to taste like that.

Here's a recipe that comes from a very good source - I haven't tried it yet though.

Maris Otter Pale Malt - 3.54Kg
Torrefied wheat - 340g
Brewers Sugar - 200g
Chocolate Malt - 20g

23l brewlength
OG = 1041

Fuggles AAU 4.7 - 25.5g - 60 mins - 15.5 IBU's
Challenger AAU 7.0 - 4.5g - 60 mins - 4 IBU's
EK Goldings AAU 4.7 - 25.5g - 60 mins - 15.5 IBU's

Total IBU's = 35.1

According to the recipe I have, there are no late copper hops - Possibly it's dry hopped in the cask, but I do not have any information to confirm this.

Does your source have a recipe for Cocker Hoop also, sib67? I have a little information on it but not enough to try and make a clone - it is my favourite beer that Jennings do and I would love to have a crack at it

Looks promising sib67. Do you think that 4.5 gms. of challenger will make its presence felt in 23 ltrs?

Unfortunately not - I'd love to have a go at that one too.

Not sure - it does seem a rather low amount. I have adjusted the quantities to give a 23l brewlength - the brewlength given in the original source was much larger. I'll check my calculations again, but I'm pretty sure they're correct.

Whilst we're on the Jennings theme, does anyone have a recipe for Sneck Lifter? My friends would be quick to form a disorderly queue if I could deliver a decent clone of that beauty.

Regards

Monk posted this a while back,

Sneck Lifter, pale malt, torrified wheat, invert sugar, small percentage of black malt. Challenger, Fuggles, and Goldings whole hops."

I forgot to notice where he got it from, seems about right. I'm wondering whether they do what a few breweries do and brew a basic beer then add the small bit of black, as it's very similar sounding grain/hop bill to Cumberland Ale. I'm sure Black Sheep do something similar, with the black/roast barley going into Riggwelter, another favourite of mine.

I might have a play on Promash and see what comes up

My RAA from '97 says pale malt and torrified wheat, Goldings and Challenger whole hops. When I took the brewery tour, the guide said it was all Styrian Goldings, which makes sense for the late hops.

That's from the same RAA. I've played around with a recipe but I've never come up with anything I thought would be close. I would love to brew one though, there's nothing like it around these parts.

Did anyone have a go at the Cumberland Ale?

I made some 2 days ago, and it's currently at 1015, from 1042. I'll let you know how it goes - the main problem may be getting some of the real stuff to do a comparison. I was in Cockermouth a couple of months ago, but I don't think I would be able to remember exactly what it tastes like - I've had a few different beers since then. I could always order some online.

I have it entered into beersmith to do in the near future. You can definitely taste the chocolate malt in the original despite the small amount. will be interesting to see how it turns out for you.
