Today is the day I pop my cherry!

Post by neggs » Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:10 pm

Morning everyone!

Delivery man has dropped off my H&G 10 gal kit and ive just left the mash to stand for an hour. Smells bloody lovely!

Everything seems pretty straight forward so far :D Hardest bit was trying to get 67-69c all over the mash tub! I think ive come close though [-o<

I'll check it in an hour and top up with hot water if needed for a further 30 mins. Then onto sparging! This part could be more tricky?

I'll update as the day goes on...

Good luck with your first brew, the first one is always the most daunting :D

Good luck neggs, have fun and welcome to the dark side. You won't look back.

Cheers! Ive just blown my downstairs sockets a few times plugging in the twin boiler! I may have to run it off the one element today until I sort it out

This is what im making today...

4kg Pale Malt
200g crystal *optional
60g goldings/fuggles full boil
20g goldings/fuggles last 15 mins
20g goldings/fuggles steep.
SO4 yeast

Two Quick question :D ...

1. For sparging (until i get a read below 1010), do I need to use warm water to sparge with?

2. When I get the wart into the boiler, what is the best way to measure the 27l's i need? There are no measure marking on any of the equipment.

Cheers!

You really need to run each element off a different physical socket (i.e. not both off the same double socket).

Yep. Roughly just below 80degC. You could go down to 1006.

Measure 27l of water with a jug before you transfer the wort and mark it with a pen?

Have a good one :D

Are you running both elements from the same twin socket?

Tried that, but still kept blowing. i'll look into it later...

What's tripping - the MCB or the RCD?

MCB? Switch on my main board. I simply switch it back to "on" and away I go again.

Mash after an hour still smelling yum yum! Temp dropped to 65c, now back up to 68-69c for another 30 mins.

ive got some water warming in the boiler now for the sparging

Sounds like an MCB. Can you see a 16 or 32 written on it somewhere?

65c would have been ok, it's what I mash at most of the time. But horses for courses :D

Good to hear it's going well.

The switch has a B32 on it. I do have LOADS running off sockets downstairs! Not sure if this makes a difference?

Cheers.

It will do. It's a 32 amp ring circuit, each element will take just over 10 amps. If you've got a lot of other stuff running at the same time I doubt it can handle it.

I suspect you've got another ring circuit (upstairs?) that you may be able to use for the second element.

Worth a try. Cheers James.
