Mash Timings?

Post by mctoon » Mon Dec 15, 2008 11:29 pm

I was going to brew another batch tommorrow, I can sort of schedule the timings around starting the mash off, but i could be late coming home to start the sparge,,, I know the temps are critical, I dont wnt to waste my time if i ruin the beer,, at most the mash could be siting there fore an extra hour,, any ideas,,,

Cheers Mal

As long as your mash tun is well insulated, you should be fine. Some people mash overnight with no problems!

I'm not sure what the lowest advisable temperature is though....or if it even matters if it drops lower in the end as long as you get at least the recommended mash time at the proper temperature. It probably does though, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly....

I have often left my mash an extra hour. As long as conversion was at the temp you wanted, leaving the temp to drop a little is fine.

my last brew (Pendle Witches Brew) I went for the usual 90 minute mash but forgot to heat up my sparge water so it was in the tun for an extra 20 minutes or so.
Still only lost less than 1C and maybe coincidence but seemed to get a higher percentage too

Started mash at 1430, at 67C went to work , now 1730 and it only 59-60ish, what you think?

re-circulating now as the sparge water warms
