10gall receipies - simple question but hopefully worth asking
Is there any hassle with doubling up Dave Lines brilliant formulae from 5 to 10 gallons? I've followed about 15 of the 5 gall lots but am awaiting the arrival of a new "hop and grape 10 gall brewery".
I've not used a thermobox for a mash before - any tips?
Will I miss my old grain bag-hopefully not!
Does anyone rack off into 10gall casks? - if so what make and where do you get 'em?
all suggestions welcome

Re: 10 gall receipies
As far as I'm aware, double the recipe is the way to go from 5 to 10 gallons.
I don't use a thermo box MT so I can't comment on that.

Paul at Barley Bottom says he's getting some plastic firkins (9 gal.) in, would they be any good?bikedoc wrote:Does anyone rack off into 10gall casks? - if so what make and where do you get 'em?
Re: 10 gall receipies
I use a H&G 10 gallon brewery, The boiler and fermenter are 60 liters to the brim wich is 13 gallons near enough. I brew about 7 gallons at a time because you would need the boiler filled to the brim to end up with 10 gallons after boiling, this would be messy.
On the other hand, if you use a 10 gallon recipe and sparge until you have about 10 gallons in the boiler (the efficiency loss would hardly be worth considering because you have got all the best stuff out of the mash by then), then during the boil you can top the boiler up with a kettle to replace the stuff that boils away as you are going along so that you end up with 10 gallons to go into the fermenter.
The main reason I dont do this is because I am not strong enough to lift 10 gallons up to be dropped through the cooler (CFC) and I am too tight to buy pumps.

I brew 9 gallon batches, I can either fill 2 cornies or 1 corney and 30+ bottles. Works O.K for me!
