flaked maize?

Post by grubac » Fri May 29, 2009 12:46 pm

Hey Guys

I feel like I should know the answer to this.

Do I have to crush the flake maize with the rest of the barley or does it get added to the mash as flakes???

Flakes will be fine, I have used them many times myself in Mrs H's lagers. No need to crush them.

do you all buy flaked maize from the LHBS or has anyone ever used cornflakes?
I read somewhere sainsbury's own brand are good as they have the least additives

Yes, I've used cornflakes in the past, but never in any quantity. I can't say they made much impact either but you are right about other ingredients, salt is a common one.
They would be just thrown in from the packet and well stirred and they would soon fragment. My favourite from the kitchen cupboard was oats. A tablespoon of porridge would be added to the mash if it was on the breakfast menu on brewday. That I could taste although most books I've read advise against using oats.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

I have heard that pet store is cheaper, if you go some where they sell horse feed they sell big bags.
