Too Warm To Brew?
Is it time to stop for the summer yet or is there still time for a couple more

It's sweltering up here in geordieland!garwatts wrote:Is it time to stop for the summer yet or is there still time for a couple more
Well relatively!

In the house, it now seems far too warm, especially in ours when the tumble dryer etc are on the go!
Under my conditions, over the last few days, I'd have had trouble keeping the fermentation temperature down especially when it's really going for it.
The insect count is up too, and undoubtedly other airborne ale pathogens will be more prolific, the little beasts!

Re: Too Warm To Brew?
You could say that, I have an FV on the go that likes to creep up to 26c. Good job I have an ATC-800 ready to wire in

Re: Too Warm To Brew?
My shed is FAR too hot.. but I have an insulated box for my FV and every morning before I go to work I open it up and pop a 2l coke bottle of ice on top of the fv and then when I return in the evening there is still some ice in it and the temperature in the box 17.5c which is possibly too cold, but at the moment I can only manage a low tech solution... SWMBO thinks I should be doing DIY and buying things for the house and not building temperature controled brew boxes in the shed!!
Re: Too Warm To Brew?
I've got a crappy Swan fridge to use for brewing.
For conditioning it'll stay at less than 7deg or over about 17degC - It's bloody useless!

The Old Speckled Hen clone I brewed the other day is sitting there at about 23-24C. I think that may well be my last brew for a while

Best wishes

Re: Too Warm To Brew?
My garage is fairly cool if it gets too warm I put the FV in a tub of cold water. Keep several ice packs in freezer which I can add to the water if ness. I brew all year round
Re: Too Warm To Brew?
Last week it was 19º and today it's 22º. Hope it doesn't get much warmer.
Re: Too Warm To Brew?
I've laid the boiler up until late August now. Us homebrewers must be the only people who want for a cool summer! Last year I brewed right through. I've taken the elements out and given them a good soak in citric acid solution and made them shine again.
I don't think I've enough HB left to see me through, maybe about 90 bottles. There'll be alot of 'bottle creation' going on via supermarket bought ale.

Ah well, up here in Scotland we only have a few weeks when it's much warmer than this. I'm going to keep brewing through the summer. What styles are there that don't suffer from fermenting at 25º?

According to the Met Office it's going to turn a bit cooler later next week so I may just be able to squeeze another brew in.
Best wishes

IIRC Saison Dupont let their beers get up to around 30ºInvalid Stout wrote:Ah well, up here in Scotland we only have a few weeks when it's much warmer than this. I'm going to keep brewing through the summer. What styles are there that don't suffer from fermenting at 25º?
Re: Too Warm To Brew?
I'm eventually going to get an ATC setup for my little swan fridge and use that as my fermenting room.
When using the ATC, is it best to put the probe in the fermenting wort or just the air in the fridge?

Re: Too Warm To Brew?
I've put brewing on hold (although imminent uni exams are another reason for this) until the weather cools slightly. FV will probably get wrapped with a wet towel the next brew though, with a deskfan blowing it.

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now
