I think the real question is given how cheap black malt is and how little you use in most beer recipes, why would you bother trying to make it?

Because I dont have any and its not worth the carriage cost to get some when I have everything else i need

You could if you could be arsed running up your leccy bill and filling the house with acrid black smoke
. Apparently it is a rather smoky process and not really suitable for home diying AFAIK.

If it were me I'd leave it out then. It's usually just used as a colouring.Mitchamitri wrote:Because I dont have any and its not worth the carriage cost to get some when I have everything else i need

How much does the recipe call for, if its only a small amount for colouring then chuck in the dark choc malt and forget about it, if its a large part of the grist and a big flavour component of the beer then it will change the end product subtely, personally though i'd bung it in and make it anyway, recipes are meant for changingMitchamitri wrote:....or how close in character is dark choc malt to black malt?

I was forced to do it when an order didn't come in. Don't think the wife has forgiven me yet
