First 5 Gallon AG - first disaster?

Post by Mungo » Mon Jun 15, 2009 2:30 pm

My first 5 Gallon AG took place on Saturday. All went pretty much to plan and I ended up with 25 litres of wort at 1046 SG. S04 Yeast was pitched late Saturday night and fermentation started Sunday lunch time.

Now the problem! I was reading through Graham Wheeler's book this morning I noticed a section on 'dropping' within the first few days. It also said that some yeasts can require additional air. So, somewhat impulsively, I sterilised another bin and opened the tap, figuring at this early stage that the yeast might do with the extra air. Admittedly, GW does say to use syphon tubing; but I just opened the tap and poured from FV1 to FV2. Now it's beginning to dawn on me that I may have oxidised my beer. :? :? :? :( Do you think I have? Is there any way back from this, or is it loo cleaner?

Hi

I have done this before fermentation has really got going and had no problems whatsoever, I think you'll be fine... :D There is certainly no need to panic, now just let it ferment out then taste it.. You should have 5 gallons of fine beer!!

Good luck
Paul

Thanks Paul. Fermentation is continuing - vigorously - on that basis alone I think I'll leave it and see what happens. [-o< I hope I haven't ruined it...

My first Ag never went to plan and halv way through the boil we noticed a mould taste in the wort. The only way out was to actually just tip the wort into another pan (from height) there was so much air in it that i was sure it would be ruined.... But it turned out to be a nice and extremely quaffable beer.

I understand that the process is actually very forgiving.

Just dont introduce any air AFTER fermentation as you risk oxidation.
Good luck with that.
Any chance of sharing that pea pod wine recipe of yours.... i am growing my own peas and wouldnt mind making that with some of them...
