I opened one of my recently brewed bottles ( which were bottled 7 days ago )of "Deuchars ipa " last night and straight away I noticed there is a slight burnt aroma to the brew which is not present in the tasting. Now I got the exact same aroma in my "Timothy Taylor" clone which I wasn't too bothered about because the T.T that I drank in the pub a few weeks ago had a very similar aroma but a lot fainter. Now the common ingredients in the two brews have been Golden Promise, Golden Styrians and S.O.4 Yeast.
Anyone got any ideas?
Aroma question
Re: Aroma question
Hi Billy,
Does it smell smoky (like wood smoke) or like burnt rubber?
If it smells smoky you could have burnt some extract / grains on the element depending on whether you mash in your boiler or brew with extract. This can be avoided in future by either keeping an eye on your mash (if you're mashing in the boiler) and not burning anything. If you're brewing with extract then dissolve the extract in some water prior to adding it to the boiler that way it wont stick to the element.
Burnt rubber smells are where the yeast dies and starts to break down (autolysis) I'm not sure what causes it or how to avoid it.

Re: Aroma question
I'm beginning to think it's the yeast. SO 4 does seem to work very very quickly so maybe I should rack the brew a lot earlier. Of course th I.P.A. had only been in the bottle for a week and hopefully the aroma will fade in time just like it did with the Landlord.
Re: Aroma question
Well I had a few bottles last night and the aroma has gone.
I normally transfer the brew about two days after the final gravity has settled down and then transfer to another keg for one more day and then I bottled the stuff.

Re: Aroma question
Well I had a few pints of London Pride on the weekend and that had exactly the same aroma. It sems I'm doing something right.
