Nightmare Brew Day

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would share with you everything that went wrong today, I only did my first all grain brew a couple of weeks ago and as I was off work today I decided to start another, I ordered my grain yesterday and picked it up this morning, everything was set to go.

Firstly, I decided to be clever and fill my fermenting bucket with water so I could mark a 25 Litre mark on the outside, only to find that 25 litres as almost to the brim and my bucket was in fact only for 23 litres, this eplains why I got such a high SP from my first AG mash, I was using too much malt (and hops!), I was under the impression that I had made the worlds most efficiant mash tun out of a £7 cool box from ASDA!

Anyway at least I could adjust my recipie with the correct amount of malt, hops, etc, for 23 Litres

All was going well, after mashing and sparging I had 23 litres at 1039 for Timothy Talors Best Bitter which is fine as the recipie states 1037, then into the boiler, up to the boil and in with the first lot of hops, after that it was ok for an hour, but 10 mins later when I went to drop in my wort chiller the Boiler's thermal safty had cut out and as it was probably the hottest day of the year it was not going to reset anytime soon, so I decided to add my final hops, give it 20 mins floating around and call it a day, I ended up with 22 litres with the gravity spot on 1037, which is now fermenting!

An hour later after being filled with cold water the boiler started to work again so at least its not knacked as I first feared, I also broke my favorite thermomiter, dooh!

Can anyone give any advice if you think this will still make a good beer having only had a 60 min boil and the aroma hops not realy getting boiled in?

Regards Marc

Quite a few brewers go for a 60 minute boil anyway, so no problem there. It won't matter that your aroma hops were not boiled either, the 20 min soak will have produced a similar effect as dry hopping, I do this myself with some of my brews after switching my boiler off.

Don't worry, you will still have a brew to be proud of.
