Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
Just doughed in and realised I didn't bring the temp down to strike heat i.e 72 in this case; It was more like 85!!
Once doughed in it was 72 so I'm stirring away trying to get it down to 66.
Have I completely ruined the grist; should I ditch it or crack on and hope for the best?
Your thoughts appreciated

Rick, quickly add a bit cold water to bring it down to 66C, it doesn't matter if the mash is more runny than normal.
Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
possibly but why not go ahead with the mash and see what sort of run off you get, if it's really low on the sugar points then bin it, if you get a respectable OG, go ahead with the boil.
Just do a 60 min mash to save time in case it's knackered.

Aye, good point.. I'll wait and see; if all else fails I'll weigh our more grist but have no crystal left so it won't be a White Shield.. .DOH!
Pre-boil gravity should be around 1030; what would you deem respectable?
Thanks Garth

Cheers again Garth

Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
sorry for not replying, been doing the 'Good Dad' thing stuck at a kids party.................
that's three hours of me life I'll not get back
you may find that the resulting beer is a bit more full bodied than normal and it may not ferment as low as you expect, using something attentive like Nottingham might bring it down to as low as possible, but it should still be a good pint.
It's better than chucking it all away, especially as you had no more crystal.
I take it you are looking for a post boil OG of 1044 or so?

Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
No worries, your info was fast enough to help out mate.
I was looking for a post boil of 1035, so can't grumble at 1034 LOL
Final reading came in at a hefty 1053 although I was short by 3L...
Really not getting on with this new tun either, 2 brews and 2 stuck sparges but that's another story
The worst brew day to date and I was sober... lesson learnt!

yep, grease yourself up with a pint or so of your best while brewing, as long as I don't go overboard I find it makes for a good brewday.....rick_huggins wrote:The worst brew day to date and I was sober... lesson learnt!

what manifold/bottom are you using in your tun Rick?
Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
Sounds like it turned out ok in the end, it always does.
72c is at the top end and all that will have happened is the shock will have got them working quickly, bringing the temp down for the majority of the mash time steadied the ship so the brew will be fine

Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
I've just upgraded my coolbox, 15mm manifold, syphon effect tun for a NO marmite/ false bottom/ bottom drain tap and have had my only 2 stuck sparges to date, not best impressedGarth wrote:what manifold/bottom are you using in your tun Rick?rick_huggins wrote:The worst brew day to date and I was sober... lesson learnt!
Cheers for the vote of confidence Scooby; maybe I should change my recent vote in "art or science" to fly by the seat of my pants LOL
Re: Major Boo Boo for No 11...HELP?
After 10 days she came out at 1020 (highest ever) which gives me an ABV of 4.4 (lowest ever), tastes and looks great, I just hope the bottles don't go Ka-Pow!

What does your false bottom look like, maybe you just need more holes? I put holes into mine until i was sick looking at it, and then i put a few hundred more in

You should be fine on the bottle bomb front, you've probably been left with a lot of unfermentable suagars due to the high mash temp.
