I have just finished my second AG brew. The last one i did i collected too much wort 1 1/2 litres more. so this time i adjusted my boil loss to 10% but this time around have only collected 21 litres. I think i should have stuck to the 15% loss again then i would have probably been ok. The confusing thing though that my gravity for my last brew would probably have been bang on if i had collected the right amount. But this time my starting gravity is 1.044, with the original gravity being 1.043 so one point out. If i had collected two litres more would it had been way out or would it have been ok as there would have been more water to wash the remaining sugars out of the mash. I am a bit confused i dont think its an efficiency thing as my first brew had an overall efficiency of 74.5% taken from beer engine. So am i right in saying this is a liquor problem with getting my quantities right.
When inputing on the batch sparge calculator i only put in my mash tun dead space is this right? With the other numbers i mainly use the defaults but this time putting in 10% boil loss because of my last brew.
Any info to get my head round this would help.
thanks
Lewis
AG 2 Bass Bitter
Re: AG 2 Bass Bitter
After 25 AG brews I'm still not totally there with volumes.
The only thing I can suggest is the 15% loss in boiling is per hour. So in a 90 minute boil you'll lose 22.5%. It really does depend on the vigour of the boil. In a 2 element boiler running both elements you're likely to hit the 22.5% loss over 90 minutes. With a gentle single element boil I would be of the thinking its a fair bit less.
Hops also retain about 3L of wort. Again different amounts of hops are used so its not an exact figure.
I just make sure I have around 4L of bottled water on standby!
