Yerast starter going mental!

Post by danielzieba » Wed Oct 21, 2009 8:59 am

Hi.

just made a yeast start with the recipe of

400mml water
50g light spray malt

the yeast is a WYeast. not sure which. i get it off a friend.

anyway i did the starter in a 2l coke bottle. fitted airlock as usual.

when i came back to the bottle 30 mins later yeast was all over the place. it had come out through the airlock!!!

previously i have used muntons gold yeast and ive been able to do a starter in a 500ml bottle no problems but i thought seing as im putting more yeast in i will increase the bottle size to accommodate. but i did not expect it to erupt!!!?

i had to drive to tesco late last night buy a 5l mineral water bottle, clean it, fit an airlock and transfer it to that. woke up this morning and its filled half the bottle! shook it and its tamed it a bit..

never had this happen and ive been brewing for a couple of years now!. i suppose WYeast is more "active" than muntons gold dried yeast

That sounds like it's probably a lager yeast, and is designed to ferment at cooler temperatures (10-12C). If you are doing it at room temperature is will certainly go crazy! (I've been there...)
