AG No2 Help Please

Post by urbantreemonkey » Sun Oct 25, 2009 4:58 pm

Hi everyone
Just collected my wort from the boil and im short about 3 litres or so :( The other thing is should be 1038 o.g ( its a G.W deuchars ipa ) but its 1048 :(
Could i top up with bottled water to get the right amount/gravity? If so how much should i use, 3 litres is roughly what im short should i use 3 litres of bottled water? oh and i havent started using the immersion chiller yet.
Thanks for the help in advance guys.

Top it up with water. It'll also bring the SG down closer to what you expect.
Best wishes

I think you should be able to top up thus inreasing voulume and decreasing OG but I'm no expert. I've only done one AG brew.

Without knowing your volumes nobody will be able to tell you how much to add assuming you want to get 1038 OG...However this looks like it should help.

You say you haven't used your chiller yet, I think you should probably be looking at gravity after the cold break. Also have you adjusted for temperature? I know I make stupid errors at times :)

Yeah the reading was at 20c i drew some off in a sample jar and left it to cool while i had to go out so gravity is correct.
I was brewimg a 15 litre batch but i think i got 12ish but either way the og should be 1038 not 1048 so something went wrong :( no idea what, need to work that out.

It should come out about bang on target SG once you've diluted it to 15Ls

Possibly just that your evaporation will be the same as it would be larger preboil volume and therefore larger as a percentage for a small brew? Three litres dilution looks about on the money though
Scooped by osb again :D

Dilution rate is quite easy to calculate.................but the easiest way is to add water with the hydrometer in the bucket and stir. Once you have the desired reading you are done!!!!

Thanks for all the help and advice guys.
Just finished cleaning up and a spot of dinner :) I added 3 litres to make it 15 and it was spot on 1038 :D
I think its to do with my evaporation losses, need to allow for more loss my boiler only holds 21 litres so tied to smaller batches ( only cost me £4 from a boot sale never used) Hope this one turns out a good un!
