Probably the wrong place to post a yeast question but..

Put a batch of Gales Porter to bed last night using a split WLP002 (it's now about 15 hours since pitching) and it seems to be slow to get going.

I was expecting to find a reasonable head or at least some signs of fermentation but it looks very poor.

Is this correct?

I've read that WLP002 is a very flocculent and clumpy yeast although it does produce good clear beer. It may be an obvious thing to suggest but what temperature is your wort? Ambient temperature where I do my brewing took a massive decline last night so I got my trusty brew belt on the fermentation bin and this keeps things at a steady 20C. This gets things fermenting fantastically well.

Give it a bit more time, the WLP's I've used have all been slower than dry yeast to take off.

What size starter did you make and was it active when pitched? Did you give it a good thrash to aerate?

I haven't used White lab yeast for a while but I make 1.5l Wyeasts starters 3-4 days prior to brewing, then make a 'flying starter' with 500ml of wort 15mins into the boil, this is active on pitching and airlock activity is seen 2-4hrs after.

Agree with scooby on the flying starters, mine are normally up and running within 5hrs

Sokay now  . Gave it a good stir just after the post, then checked about an hour ago. Going great guns now.

Think the starter was possibly too small.

I've got 5 more in the fridge, so next time I'll use more wort.
