TTL tomorrow. Which yeast?

Post by dopejack » Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:02 pm

Hi
I'm all set to do a TTL tomorrow, but was wondering which of the yeasts I have would be the best to use. I've got Nottingham, Garvin English Ale or good ol' S04. I appreciate that there may be a better choice than any of them, but I don't really want to make another trip out.
Cheers

Nottingham and Gervin are the same yeast strain.
Best wishes

Out of those I would use SO4.

If you're a hophead, UK-05.

Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire Bitter is only released every couple of years. However a very good approximation is Wyeast Ringwood 1187. Although the Ringwood Brewery is in Hampshire, the yeast came originally from the Hull Brewery and is (in my experience) an excellent flocculating typical Yorkie, very suited to a TTL.

Ironic: The Hull brewery was taken over by Mansfield who were taken over by the Wolverhampton and Dudley mob, who are now trading as their "scalp" Marstons. Marstons took over Ringwood so the yeast is now back in-house.

Only in the 21st Century hey.

Brilliant yeast however and makes a good mild as well.

I used Nottingham myself, and it turned out excellent (just to confuse the issue!)

Thanks again everyone, it's in the FV now, and I went with the S04, I'll try the Nottingham next time Chris and see which I prefer...it's all personal taste at the end of the day eh? Wonder if anyone with a direct line to GW's ear can persuade him to suggest the most suitable yeasts for each of his recipes in the next edition?

And just a note, I used my newly built coolbox mash tun for this ale and it was great! Crystal clear wort coming out after a few juggings, and an OG three points higher than the 1042 in the book, so it works!
