final liquer adjustment

Post by banjaxed » Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:31 pm

Hi,can any one enlighten me as to the formula to find the amount of liqueur to be added at the end of the boil to bring the wort to the desired gravity. I normally just keep adding and checking but this is a bit of a faff.
IE.a final gravity in the copper of 1051 and a gravity of 1045 required in the fermenter.

Thanks.

Last one on this page is the one you want:- http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/calc.html

e2a: or the way to work it out if you don't have your PC handy is to drop the first digit from the gravity and do:-

starting gravity / desired gravity * volume

So for example in your case, say you had 23 litres @ 1051, the answer would be 51 / 45 * 23. That's about 26 litres, so you would need to add 3 litres.

Air on the side of caution though. The calculator told me to put in three litres so I tried 2.5 lts and it still over diluted the beer, No big probs really but you just dont the gravity you wanted, just more beer!

Bear in mind that these calculations require that you know *exactly* how much wort/beer you have. In my experience the markings on the outside of buckets are not that great.
