I did a JW Lees Bitter on sunday, (25 Ltrs @ 1037). I finished up with 22ltrs at 1040, however using my good old Burco boiler without any hop strainer i was left with about 5 ltrs of trub and cold break. I was wondering f i could "tip" the boiler to get another 2/3 ltrs out

Cold Break
Re: Cold Break
I always tip my boiler. I wait until its about half drained and then (carefully) put a block of wood at the back.
Hate waste!

Re: Cold Break
Yup me too. Nothing like balancing a 29lt boiler on the edge of the work surface. Cuts my losses down dramatically too.

Re: Cold Break
+1 for me too.
I even arranged the hop strainer to be close to the tap so I could tip it a bit further.
The first time I did it I collected the last couple of litres in a bottle to see if there was any problem with clarity and trub and stuff and it was fine.
I have also learned that it pays to think about how you will tip it and arrange the pot on the tripod burner accordingly.

Re: Cold Break
So i take it from the majority of replies there is no problems in adding the last couple of litres. Must addmit the cold break and trub looks bloody awful, are you sure it doesnt effect the beer

Re: Cold Break
Yes .. nasty looking stuff.
I've been toying with the idea of adding the aroma hops in a bag when the temp hits around the 80 mark .. and then taking the bag out and putting it in a sieve and straining the last of the wort through the bag of hops.
Who knows...
