Holiday rush

Post by the red devil » Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:16 am

So it had to happen. Made a batch of high strength beer just before i went away on me hols. Fermented for seven days and transferred into secondary. Was only in secondary for four days (SG was still a bit high at 1015) but had to get it into bottle before i went away. Did seem a bit lively but..... :
Five weeks on and i tried the first bottle and talk about 'the great geyser' , the beer went every where (mostly on her kitchen floor) :(
I have tried cooling the beer in the freeze but its still a bit lively, and i don’t like ice cold beer.
Q. Can I put it back into the secondary for a couple of days and re-bottle with a little sugar.

Well no answers so i had no choice but to go ahead. Went into the garage and found 4 bottles in different states of destruction :( Seems the caps are OK but the bottles are not strong enough. Have emptied the rest (apart from what went onto the walls) into a sterilised FV and left to settle. Will re-bottle in a couple of days and check results in a few weeks. Maybe this is a first and i'm just p***ing in the wind but i'll let you know in a few weeks (if your interested!)

I've wondered this myself, if the situation is rescuable. Please do let me know.

How much did you bottle and how much do you have left?

I know it's a bit late in the day but you would have been fine leaving it the secondary FV until you got back...anyway benefits of hindsight and all that! I imagine the only issue with returning the bottles to an FV is the oxidation of the beer gained in doing this. But at the end of the day what have you got to lose? Let us know how you get on

It's usually possible to release a bit of pressure from bottles without losing the seal. Just gently ease up one side of the crown cork until the gas starts to leak out, let it hiss for a while and usually when you release the bottle opener the crown cork will reseal. There is a knack to it but that would let you purge excess pressure without having to re-bottle.

And wear some lab glasses if you're going to spend much time fiddling with bottles that have already experienced explosions.

Pah, where's your sense of fun? A beer-related injury is always going to be a talking point, assuming you survive...

Thanks guys. Keep you all informed as to whether it work and, more importantly, how it tastes. :D
As for the injury, worst i got was covered in beer from a couple of very lively bottles :( . Did manage to save around 12 pints.
