floating hopsthin

Hi Everyone

I've been conducting my hop additions by simply placing the pellets or the fresh hops in pantyhose, tying them up and throwing them into the boil. The pantyhose bag of hops obviously floats on top of the boil. This didn't bother me at first, but I've recently been questioning weather or not this good way of hopping my beer.

That being said, I was wondering what you guys do. How do you guys conduct your hop additions? Is weighing them down with something an option? Adding them directly into the boil?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It's better if you can let the hops roam free in the boil. This is why people use hop-stoppers or similar to stop the hops sticking in the tap or coming out with the wort.

In general it's not recommenced to restrict the hops in a small enclosed bag (or pantyhose), and in general you'll get better efficiency and flavor/aroma if they are free to float around in your kettle.
I actually find that whole-hops help with the filtering process, but pellets can get a bit messy and harder to filter out.

I let my dry hops float free and when it comes to siphoning i tie a bit of stocking around the end of the siphon pipe .Keeps them pesky hop bits out of the bottle.
