Just tried this and it seemed to work very well.
Sterilised the muslin first and rinsed it out. Seems to remove quite a bit of crud.
While running the wort into the FV I placed the muslin over the FV and just let it filter.
Anyone tried to filter the wort with muslin cloth?

Yep, but it does not get all the break material and all the fine-stuff out.
You're better off creating a decent whirlpool and/or having a filter inside the kettle, often best assisted with a nice bed of whole hop flowers.

I always put a muslin bag over my copper pipe filter in the boiler and mash tun, never had a stuck mash or clogged up filter in the boiler.
No need to sterilize it then either.

Ive just invested in a therminator- http://www.blichmannengineering.com/the ... nator.html and i hope to stop hop debris with one of these- http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/carava ... px?aff=122 Will let you know how i get on, but i dont expect to filter after cooling, the cold break will go in the FV.

Hi
I'll 2nd what Wolfy says. I did a partial mash, partial boil yesterday and used a muslin hop bag over a colander to strain the mash and boiled wort through. It did take out the larger bits from the mash but what got through to the boil was rather murky. Then with the hot break settling out nicely in the boiler lots of break got through to the f/v. I'm sure all the muck will settle out before I barrel but next time I'm making a double bucket thing with tap so I can return some of the runnings back over the top. Should still turn out ok tho
Cheers Tom

i always use a wine nylon straining bag the sort used for sraining fruit pulp thru ,i use it from the tun to the boiler clean it then from the boiler to the fv .this is as well as the built in strainers on both, and it still catches loads of fine bitsChrisG wrote:Just tried this and it seemed to work very well.
