Factor Down Recipe

Post by alwilson » Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:01 pm

Hi Guys,

You may have noticed I'm having some brewing problems. Also I'd like to experiment with different recipes in parallel. Often making 20-odd litres is a bit too much, both on ingredients and time to bottle.

Is there a way with a given recipe to factor it down to say 10 pints?

thanks
Alex

Hi,

IF you are sure you want to make a 5 litre ~ 8pints brew (it takes the same amount of time for a brew day 3= hours then simply divide a recipe for 23L by 23 and then times it by 5 or the number of litres you want to produce.

I did smaller brews initially (extract) and found that its easier all round to do a 16-19 litre brew whilst experimenting/learning...

It does save bottling time but everything else (Mash, boiling fermentation etc) take the same amount of time!

Hope that helps!

Just scale down the ingredients accordingly.

Brilliant, thanks Guy!

The biggest time killer I'm having is getting water to up to the boil.
30-odd litres, takes about 2 hours from cold to get there.

Plus the last two batches turned out rubbish, so that's almost 10KG of grain wasted.

So, im hoping to save on boil time, bottle time, and the amount of grain (and subsequent beer) I throw away until I get a beer that's drinkable.

Hi,

Right I'm with you now...

Once you have cracked the method and are producing a beer you are happy with, you could look at some improvments to your set up to reduce that boil up time...

If you have an electric boiler you could always use a timer to set it boiling. Fill it up set the timer for 2 hours before you plan to mash then get up to nice hot water... do your treatment (if any) and crack on with the mash!

I use Gas atm but have a Burco boiler at my brothers whihc I plan to use as a HLT - for this I will employ a timer.
It took me a while to find one that is adequately rated - the cheapo ones are only rated to 10amps ~ 1400watts
I managed to find one for a few quid more that will go upto 3000Watt (3kw) - which suits my needs a my boiler has a 2.4kw element

Hope this helps!

:)

Happy brewing!

Best wishes!

Hi Guy,

I'm with you on that, I've got a BrewPac enameled boiler - well actually, its a German made boiler, scruffily re-badged by brew-pac. I intend to demote this to the HLT when I get around to (and can justify) buying a gas set up.

cheers Guy!
