Newcastle Brown has definitely got sweeter over the years, me old late Dad reckoned that happened when they started serving it chilled, before then it just sat in pints under the counter. I remember as a teenager in the 60s it used to be called "Journey into space" after the SF radio show (way before anyone's time on this forum I bet :D ) so I bet it's been reduced in strength from the old days.

According to Roger Protz it also contains syrups and sugars, and suggests the following hops: "a complex blend of Hallertau, Northdown, Northern Brewer and Target hops"
Hallertau, well that's a head spin  - Anyway I reckon pas' recipe is good, maybe add some golden syrup and a bit of sugar, and play around with some of the hops - NB and a touch of Target for bittering, and the others later in the process. I'd maybe leave out that Hallertau.

Cheers
Michael

I had many a drunken night on "the dog" when I was a student in Newcastle - always from a half glass as was the tradition. My college was 5 minutes walk away from the Newcy Broon "factory". There was a glorious aroma on brew days! They moved to Gateshead a few years back, and I believe they've moved again. Is it brewed by John Smith's now?

There was also a lighter beer called Newcastle Amber (so rare I only ever saw it in one offy on the Westgate Road). I was assured by my local mates that it was for "lasses". I got a few bottles to try but unfortunately can't remember anything about what they tasted like!

Apologies for my digression...

Hi,

Yes, I believe production has been moved to Tadcaster - after John Smiths bitter had been moved to Cheshire(?). In the Book Clone Brews (American) the authors suggest that Newky Broon is a blend of a strong dark ale which isn't available on its own, and the Amber Ale you mention.

Cheers!

Yup, it was pretty awful stuff - as you said, for the lasses shandys mainly. I'm 61 now and it was always available in my teens in the 60s but long gone. No sad loss.
