EBU equations

Post by jack-lufc » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:17 pm

I’m just wondering if anyone could help me understand the bittering equations.

The equation I have is;

Weight of hops (grams) x alpha acid of the hops (%) x utilization (%)/volume of brew x 10

Firstly I would like to know if this equation is correct and secondly I would like to where time comes into the equation – is this utilization? In a brew if you use 30 grams of hops for the full length of the brew and then30 grams of the same alpha hops for the last 15 mins then surely the bitterness will be different

Thanks

The utilisation is time dependent.

i thought it would be, any chance of a quick explanation on how it works? is it a percentage?

cheers

There are various ways of calculating the utilisation which vary in their complexity. In the end they are all guesses and utilisation varies from one brewery to another.
