Hi guys,
Sorry to ask the same question that so many others have, but im confused by my latest one...
Brewing the GW Batemans Salem Porter clone... slightly modified. My OG was 1050, SO4 yeast was sprinkled in... not pitched (always worked for me before) on saturday, now tuesday and its at 1020... fairly normal eh? BUT the yeast head has nearly collapsed... does this mean its going to stick? If so what do I do? rouse? and does this just mean stir up the yeast at the bottom?
I know im probably jumping the gun, since its only on day 3/4, but just seems unusual for the head to collapse!
Cheers!
Is it stuck?
Re: Is it stuck?
That's sounds like the usual time frame for s04
It sometimes springs into life if you disturb it (probably because s04 flocculates well).
I would expect it to drop a few more gravity points over the next day or two but it sounds like it's basically done.
What was the mash temperature?
Have you ever had this sort of issue before?

Re: Is it stuck?
Mash temp 66, Expected SG is 1009ish...
Never had this before, I almost wonder if its to do with the seasonal temp... i thought id get away with fermenting at room temp!!
Checked this morning, there is a really loose head on it now... ie, its transparent, can see the beer through it. Im going to see what it looks like tomorrow morning and then rouse if its no better!

Re: Is it stuck?
Hi Rowang
If you have mashed at that temp before and this is an anomaly then temperature is the likely cause but I've had s04 struggle on at about 18'c.
If it's still dropping gravity just let it keep going.
If you do feel the need to rouse give it a reasonably gentle swirl and try not to disturb the sediment too much or you may create other issues.
Better still pop it somewhere warmer, as this will often do the trick.

I thought the whole point of rousing was to disturb the sediment?gnorwebthgimi wrote:Hi Rowang

Re: Is it stuck?
yes, I was a little unclear, I was suggesting not to go mad, hence "not too much".
Besides if the real reason it stuck is temperature then I believe that raising the temperature will have a greater impact.
