Heres the deal, i am doing a RIS tomorrow and was hoping to get a small beer on the back of the first.
As a rule i jug the water over tin foil in a fly sparge type of manner.
Here is the recipe i am using ( grist only)
the brewlength is 15 litres.
5200,00 gm Pale Malt
750,00 gm Barley, Flaked (
310,00 gm Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (236,4 EBC)
320,00 gm Carafa III (1034,3 EBC)
375,00 gm Wheat Malt, Bel (3,9 EBC)
245,00 gm Roasted Barley (591,0 EBC)
300,00 gm Amber Malt (43,3 EBC) Grain
120,00 gm Chocolate Malt (689,5 EBC) Grain 1,56 %
60,00 gm Black (Patent) Malt (985,0 EBC)
This gives me a mash volume of 19.2 litres, meaning that after subtracting deadspace and grain absorbtion i am left with 11.5 litres in the MT. I would need therfore to add 8.5 litres in order to reach my pre boil volume of 20 litres.
Seeing that i want to get a smaller beer out of this i wonder if i should just top the MT up with the 8.5 litres, stir, let stand for 15-20 minutes and then run off into the boiler,or use my normal method and jug the rest over in my usual manner.
The recipe is based on a conservative 70% efficiency ( using the jug over method), as i understand that the darker high gravity worts tend to have a lower efficiency than other more normal beers.
My thoughs would then to do one of the following:-
Add the rest of the water to the MT before emptying and recharging the MT with another 10 litres of water as per batch sparge, run off, recharge and run off again,
or...
use the jug over method until i have my pre boil volume in the boiler, the just carry on sparging into an empty vessel until i either rich a dedicated pre boil volume for the smaller batch or until the runnings are at around 1010 or so.
I would hope to get the big beer at around 9% and the smaller around 4.5-5
What is the consemsous of opinin here?
I also wonder if i am being optimistic at 70% efficiency based on the methods above and given the grist.
Anyone want to give some welcomed advice?
brew day starts at 1530 tomorrow:)
Thanks
