How safe is tap water?

Post by dean_wales » Wed Dec 01, 2010 12:04 am

Brewing some alcoholic ginger beer from ginger sugar lemons etc

For an all grain brew I wouldnt consider using any water that hadnt been boiled but this batch is a lazy batch of essentially flavoured sugar water.

After brewing the 1 gallon with the sugar and ginger etc how risky is it to just mix this with a few gallons of water straight from the tap in the FV?

The water is ice cold this time of year here in wales. It would just be so much easier and also get pitching that night.

Other wise I gotta go to my old mans and get the burco etc etc etc

Thanks,

Dean.

Probably the only issue could be chlorine. That can be sorted with a campden tablet. Other than that tap water is pretty safe.......................I wouldn't recommend a headstand in a 50 gallon barrel of it though [-X

It'll be fine i rinse all my fermenters with ordinary tap water before any beer goes into them. You don't need to worry about chlorine either because thats only an issue when fermenting malt.
