Lagering How Long
Lagering How Long
My first lager has now been Lagering for a week now at just under 0c. How long does Lagering normally take?? Judging by the weather forcast I should be able to keep it below 2c for the next week at least, Does anyone have a table for time vs temp
Re: Lagering How Long
It depends on the style, I suppose. For example many Czech breweries lager for a couple of months but since Heinkenen Bought out Pilsner Urquell I understand they only lager for 40 days nowadays
I was reading that one quite popular German Brewery only gives its Pils 10 days, which is also the time generously given by Australian Breweries with the likes of Fosters
Wouldn't be surprised if brews such as Stella, Heineken and Carling only got a week or two if they are lucky.
If your lager is a sort of pale European lager then If it was me I'd give it a couple of weeks, with up to a couple of months if it's a premium all malt beers such as a Bohemian Pilsner or a Munich Helles etc. I only brew the odd lager which is usually a bit bland and thirst quenching as opposed to fine Bohemian and I tend to to 10 /10 /10 with 10 days in primary at around 13 degrees, 10 days in lagering in cold fridge, and 10 days in a cold keg in my kegerator before drinking if that's any help.

Re: Lagering How Long
The regime at Plzen is to lager for 1 week for each degree plato of original gravity (still the case for smaller Czech brewers but not necessarily Plzen) . . . so a 12 Plato (1.048) beer would lager for 12 Weeks.
What a lot of the breweries do now is to drop the temperature to the freezing point of the beer (at which point Ice crystals form around the haze particles) then filter / centrifuge the ice crystals out, before adding back deoxygenated sterile water to replace the ice. . . . You can do this at home (apart from the filtering) and it will reduce the lagering period down to a couple of weeks (plus a couple of weeks at 2C)

Re: Lagering How Long
Its just a simple lager with 90% English Lager malt and 10% munich malt and hopped with saaz to a gravity of 1049. Its only been out in the Garden tool store at just below 0 for a week now and its very clear.

Re: Lagering How Long
Whenever I brew a lager I usually plan to lager it at 2 or 3 for 2 to 4 weeks, but if stuff comes up I let it go until I can get to it. Although when I do a czech pils I plan on 6 to 8 weeks.
I'm just here for the beer.
