Any recommend a decent cheapish digital thermometer for AG?

Post by Hoppkins » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:47 pm

Hi Guys

Long time since i brewed last, got a baby on the way and things have been manic.

One of the things i need most is a thermometer. I got a aquarium one which proved to be a big let down since it doesnt go very high (so cant measure strike temp) and updates reallly slowly and erratically when in Mash Tun.

Anyone know a nice cheap reliable one?

Thanks

I bought two of these for doing extract brews - I expect they would be spot on for mashing as well as boiling

I bought them a while back and only paid 5.95 each plus p+p, but even at a tenner they are still good value imo. Same item is available via amazon at the same cost (search for "eKitch digital food probe thermometer and timer") if you don't do ebay.

you can set a target temperature and an alarm will sound when it is reached, or can use it as a timer (good for running a boil etc), or just whack the target temp up to 110 degrees and use it as an accurate thermometer.

it has a useful stainless steel 'probe' - intended for checking food temperatures, but useful for dangling into a boiler or into your grains etc.

the main unit also has a magnet on the back which allows it to be stuck to a stainless boiler etc to keep it nice and tidy.

very happy with mine fwiw.

Get the one off the previous post.

Don't be tempted to get one of these:

There's a reason why they're cheap - its rubbish - I've got one.

How long do these digital thermometers take to settle at a steady reading?
I have one of those old glass/alcohol type and it takes forever to reach a certain temperature, which is no good if you want a fast reading when opening up the mash tun.

Cheers

I can thoroughly recommend one of these. It takes about 6 seconds to give a reading.

I think they are very common with members here

I don't know if the JBK discount code is still active or not though, check out this thread for details.

If their promotion on Comark products is still valid then it'll cost about £14 delivered including JBK discount. I have one and it's a very good thermometer, especially as the readout is at the top of the thermometer body and not the side.

I have one of these FWIW and it's fine.

I believe it to be spot on. Depends on the temp difference i.e. room temp to boiling point takes longer but only a few seconds.

Would be nice if it had auto switch off but the battery does last a very long time.

I'm just afraid of dropping it into the hot wort someday

I used to have one of these. They are OK as long as they don't get wet or steamy. No good for homebrew!

I got my eKitch thermo today. It lasted about 5 minutes before it thought that the ambient temp in my kitchen is 110C.

I'm gonna try and get a refund!

Do not get a cheap thermometer, think you get for what you pay for, as i found out!
