poor yeast activity
poor yeast activity
Help! I had my 5th AG day yesterday and it went really well. pitched the yeast at about 5pm yesterday and have just checked 7pm today and there was not much activity from the airlock so i had a quick peek and there is not much of a crust formed at all. The temp in my ATC 800+ fermentation cabinet/fridge is around 19C. I am using Nottingham dried yeast and activated it as recommended prior to pitching. have used this yeast in 2 previous brews with good results. What do i do now? Cheers Mick.

Re: poor yeast activity
Hi therebelmc
Best thing is to give it a bit more time but I've read 1 or 2 reports ( can't recall where though ) that there's an issue again with Nottingham yeast. I've only ever used it once and it didn't ferment very well
Might be worth pitching another sachet if there's no improvement by tomorrow. Is the airlock sealed properly though? I had one that I thought had failed on me but the co2 was escaping from the bung rather than going through the lock
Cheers Tom

Was the Nottingham you've previously used from the same batch? Should be ok if it is but there's still the chance of one duff sachet. I used us-05 in my latest brew and it was a bit slow to start but within 2 days it was chugging away like a good'un

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you then
Must admit that I never bother to re-hydrate, I just sprinkle the sachet on the top of the brew and let it find it's own way in life

That's interesting i wonder what the prefered method is regarding hydrate or sprinkle? Think i'll start a new thread.

The instructions on the packets I've used do say you can simply sprinkle. I think rehydrating should give you a quicker start but I'm sticking with my sprinkles
