Irish Moss vs Whirlfloc vs Protofloc ...FIGHT!
Which do people prefer?
*i've run out of Irish moss and am considering trying Whirlfloc*
Edit : Seems Protofloc is the Champ.

Whrlfloc is excellent but you ought to include Protofloc in the list too...

I used to think that Whirlfloc and Protofloc were interchangeable but recent threads on here have lead me to believe that a Protofloc tablet is considerably stronger than a Whirlfloc one. One Whirlfloc tab is spot on for 5 gallons whereas I'm told a whole Protofloc tablet is a bit too much. Of course, Protofloc comes in powder form too.
But to answer your question, having used all three I would never go back to Irish Moss. I currently use one Protofloc tablet for an 8 gallon batch. The Malt Miller sells 'em at 10 for a quid.

I use half a teaspoon of protofloc power and it's da bomb. I used to use Irish moss but needed twice to three times as much. So that's where my vote goes.

As far as I'm concerned they all do the same thing. Once you get the dose right.
Re: Irish Moss vs Whirlfloc ...FIGHT!
I'm quite a newbie at all this, and my first order for Irish Moss was replaced with Protofloc granules due to stock issues. I did my first two brews with Protofloc and my second two with Irish Moss; so far it's looking like Protofloc is winning on the clarity stakes, but - stupidly I'm sure - for some reason I feel like Protofloc is more chemical and less desirable than Irish Moss.
Happy for any comments here to correct me - I'd like to get this right in my own mind once and for all.

I thought protofloc is just the extracted active ingredient from irish moss?

They are just refined sea weeds, nothing much really added to them.
Re: Irish Moss vs Whirlfloc vs Protofloc ...FIGHT!
It is but something in how it has been processed or packaged seems to make it perform better. The break material left behind in the boiler is pretty different between Protofloc and Irish Moss.JackA wrote:I thought protofloc is just the extracted active ingredient from irish moss?
And if nothing else, the tablets are loaded with something that makes the tablet cause a fizzy eruption on contact with liquid (bicarb I guess...). What's not to like?

Re: Irish Moss vs Whirlfloc vs Protofloc ...FIGHT!
Theres nothing wrong with irish moss BUT I have ended up with protofloc and the break material does seem to be denser. I'm not fancy in my methods - filtering my wort doesn't involve fractional distillation and a degree in chemistry - I just pour the stuff out of the urn into the FV via the colunder and every sieve I can find in the kitchen all piled on top of each other Using protofloc I collected double the amount of gunk I'd usually get. This is completely unscientific, but its the way Blue Peter would do it and therefore a better way of coming to the conclusion that protofluck is better and as boingy says its cool to add because it goes all fizzy

Re: Irish Moss vs Whirlfloc vs Protofloc ...FIGHT!
old thread but having switch to whirlfloc from regular irish moss, I am disappointed with the results. Irish moss seem to give me a tighter and denser trub, and the cone forms neater and clums together much better than whirlfloc.
I think im just one of the few who prefers regular irish moss, but the results speaks for itself
